The Kaiāwhina Kaupapa Māori is a challenging role as part of the Māori Relationships team that provide support and advice to both internal and external customers on cultural issues raised by tāngata whenua relevant to consents and monitoring, planning and policy and other relevant legislative requirements of council.

In this role, you will take a proactive approach to meet with hapū/iwi to understand issues related to specific work programmes and areas to develop mutually agreed solutions that strengthen the relationship and engagement between council and tāngata whenua.

The key responsibility will be to develop relationships with hapū/iwi to have a kanohi ki te kanohi approach in Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) matters and providing advice and information to assist in having a shared understanding of the processes, and seeking resolutions of any issues raised by tāngata whenua.

This is a permanent full-time position based in Whāngarei.

You will ideally have a relevant qualification in Māori and/or sciences and experience and working knowledge of the Resource Management Act 1991. Experience working in a council environment is preferred.

You will have a sound understanding of tikanga Māori as well as knowledge and understanding of the of the complexity of tāngata whenua issues and challenges, particularly in regard to Te Taitokerau.
